Spain
The DGT publishes the restriction calendar in the BOE every year. General rule: Sunday and public holiday afternoons and evenings, on designated roads, for vehicles over 7.5 t.
Applies to: Goods over 7.5 t on designated roads; separate rules for ADR and abnormal loads ·Updated on 02 October 2026
When you cannot drive
Sundays and public holidays
Usually between 08:00/09:00 and 24:00, depending on the road
The times and the roads covered are set out in the DGT annual resolution published in the BOE.
Eve of public holidays and weekend getaways
One-off restrictions on busy corridors
Applied on special operation dates (Christmas, Easter, August).
Dangerous goods (ADR)
Wider restrictions than the general ones
They include compulsory routes and bans at weekends and on public holidays.
Most common exemptions
- Perishable foodstuffs and live animals, under the conditions of the annual resolution
- Combined transport, on the leg between the terminal and the loading or unloading point
- Emergency, assistance and public service vehicles
Exemptions vary from country to country and almost always depend on paperwork on board proving what the load is.
Planning notes
Spain has no single rule you can memorise: it has an annual calendar. The resolution of the Dirección General de Tráfico, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado at the end of each year, sets out for the following twelve months the dates, times and sections where lorries over 7.5 tonnes cannot drive.
Two planning notes. First, Spanish restrictions are often section by section, not country-wide: at the same hour the A-2 may be closed and the AP-2 open. Second, the Basque Country and Catalonia publish their own calendars, so anyone heading into France through Irún or La Jonquera has to check both.
Road closures and works of the day are published, in Portuguese, on the traffic page.
