Germany: A59 closed for nine months between Monheim and Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf-bound
Autobahn GmbH closed, from 2 October and for about nine months, the Cologne→Düsseldorf direction of the A59 between Monheim-Süd and Düsseldorf-Süd, for a full resurfacing and bridge renewal. The official diversion runs via the A542, A3 and A46 — anyone crossing the Rhine-Ruhr region toward the Netherlands or northern Germany should allow extra time.
Anyone crossing the Rhine-Ruhr region toward the Netherlands or northern Germany via the right bank of the Rhine has, since 2 October, one less stretch of the A59 to rely on. Autobahn GmbH, the federal motorway authority, has fully closed the Cologne→Düsseldorf direction between the Monheim-Süd and Düsseldorf-Süd junctions — about 12 km — and expects to keep it closed until 30 June 2027, nearly nine months.
Why it closed
The works renew the surface, repair bridges and improve drainage on a stretch with degraded concrete. It is the second phase of a wider A59 project that, according to Autobahn GmbH, won’t be finished until 2035; the opposite direction, Düsseldorf→Leverkusen, was already dealt with in an earlier phase and runs normally.
The mandatory diversion
The official route leaves via the A542, continues on the A3 and rejoins via the A46. ADAC North Rhine-Westphalia warns the effect reaches beyond the diversion motorways themselves: the secondary road network around Monheim will also see more traffic, with the L402 (Knipprather Straße) also fully closed.
Nine months is long enough to justify reviewing a regular route rather than relying on the diversion signposted on the day — especially for anyone who makes this run between Portugal or Spain and north-west Germany or the Netherlands on a regular basis.
