← Driving bans in Europe

Hungary

Weekend ban for vehicles over 7.5 t, starting on Saturday evening — and earlier in summer — until Sunday 22:00.

Applies to: Goods vehicles over 7.5 t ·Updated on 23 October 2026

When you cannot drive

  • Weekend (winter)

    Saturday 22:00 → Sunday 22:00

  • Weekend (summer)

    Saturday 15:00 → Sunday 22:00

The summer period is set each year, typically July and August.

  • Public holidays

Eve in the evening → holiday 22:00

Most common exemptions

  • Perishable goods and live animals
  • Combined transport and emergency vehicles
  • Vehicles already under way when they enter the country, up to the first suitable stopping place

Exemptions vary from country to country and almost always depend on paperwork on board proving what the load is.

Planning notes

Hungary works as a corridor between central Europe and the Balkans, and its weekend ban has one important quirk: in summer it starts at 15:00 on Saturday, seven hours earlier than during the rest of the year.

The HU-GO toll system requires payment before entering the road concerned. Driving without a valid ticket is an offence in its own right, detected by gantry, and fines are issued section by section.
