Austria

Saturdays from 15:00 and Sundays and public holidays until 22:00 for vehicles over 7.5 t. In Tyrol there is also a night ban and sectoral bans by type of goods.

Applies to: Goods over 7.5 t (including combinations) ·Updated on 21 October 2026

When you cannot drive

  • Saturdays

    15:00 → 24:00

  • Sundays and public holidays

    00:00 → 22:00

  • General night ban

    22:00 → 05:00 on designated roads

It mainly applies to the motorways along the Inn valley and the Brenner axis.

  • Sectoral ban in Tyrol

    All year, on the A12

It bans certain goods from the road and forces the rail alternative.

Most common exemptions

  • Perishable goods and live animals, under the defined conditions
  • Combined transport within the set radius
  • Newer EURO vehicles, for some of the night and sectoral restrictions

Exemptions vary from country to country and almost always depend on paperwork on board proving what the load is.

Planning notes

Austria stacks three layers of restriction, and it is the country where it is easiest to get caught out by looking only at the first. There is the weekend ban (Saturday from 15:00, Sunday until 22:00), the night ban on designated roads, and the sectoral bans in Tyrol, which keep certain goods off the A12 whatever the day and hour.

On top of that comes Blockabfertigung: on heavy-traffic days the Tyrolean authorities meter the flow of lorries coming in from Bavaria. It is not a ban, it is a queue — often hours long — and it eats driving time all the same.

Anyone crossing the Brenner should plan the crossing outside the metering windows and have the daily rest set up on the German or Italian side, depending on the direction.

Road closures and works of the day are published, in Portuguese, on the traffic page.
